Top 10 Events to Attend in Savannah this May

The weather is warming up, the days are longer and summer is right around the corner! May is the perfect time to attend one of Savannah’s many events, including everything from live music to costume parties to seafood tasting! Pick out an event or two (or three!) and add it to your Savannah itinerary to have the best May getaway ever.

1. May the 4th be with You

Celebrate this unofficial Star Wars-themed holiday at The Chromatic Dragon – a local Savannah pub and restaurant that doubles as a gamer’s paradise. Dress up as your favorite Star Wars character and eat, drink, play video and board games, participate in a round of trivia and potentially win the costume contest! The Chromatic Dragon is also celebrating their first anniversary — it’s a celebration not to be missed!

Preservation Festival

2. Preservation Festival

According to the National Trust for Historic Preservation designates, May is the official historic preservation month! The Historic Savannah Foundation is embracing May and all things historic preservation by hosting an educational festival demonstrating what makes Savannah unique. Festivities include an awards ceremony, a free lecture and reception, a wine tour of past award-winning projects and a neighborhood-wide block party. Click here to see the full list of events.

State of the Art

3. State of the Art: Savannah Weekend 

At this art-filled weekend event, you’ll be able to see the works of local artists while exploring Savannah. On Friday, attend the Mega Art March – an opportunity for art enthusiasts to navigate through downtown and midtown Savannah for an evening packed full of art shows, including a presentation of videos exploring the local art scene by Telfair’s Teen Council. Come back Saturday for Free Family Day featuring demonstrations and performances by local visual and performing artists.

4. River Street Seafood Festival 

The River Street Seafood Festival is one of River Street’s longest running and most anticipated events of the year! Munch on local shrimp, oysters, crab and crawfish while listening to live music along the beautiful Savannah River. On Friday night, enjoy fireworks as they blaze the sky above the river! Grass skirts and Hawaiian shirts are optional but encouraged!

5. Southbound 3rd Anniversary 

Join Southbound Brewing Co, a Savannah beer brewery, as they celebrate their third anniversary! Live music with the very talented Velvet Caravan, a local gypsy jazz band, and friends. See work by local artists, grab souvenirs vendors and get snackin’ with the help of fresh food trucks! Whether you’re a beer enthusiast or simply just want to relax – this is the event for you!

Alexander Korbrin

6. Alexander Korbrin in Concert

Pianist Alexander Korbrin will be wowing the audience with his performance at the Messiah Lutheran Chuch. His prize winning performances have been praised for their brilliant technique, musicality and emotional engagement with the audience. In 2005, Kobrin was awarded the Gold Medal at the 12th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The concert will feature works of Shuman, Brahms and Schubert.

7. Tybee Island Tour of Homes

This is a great chance to peek inside some of Tybee’s most luxurious and quirky homes. Now in its 19th year, this event is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Enjoy lunch and a guided tour as you gather design inspiration from the many colorful homes of Tybee Island!

8. Fashion Show SCAD

Are you a fashionista? Then you don’t want to miss Savannah’s biggest night of fashion! See the next big names in the fashion industry debut their collections at this extraordinary fashion show. You’ll be inspired by the trendy works of current SCAD students.

WHEN: May 21 at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.
WHERE: Trustees Theater

9. Color Run 5k

Run your way through Savannah while being dusted with all the colors of the rainbow! Known as the “happiest 5k on the planet,” the Color Run is an event perfect for families who like to have fun while they get active. Run or walk your way through the course and be delightfully sprayed with colorful paint! Don’t forget your camera — this will be a day to remember!

American Traditions Competition

10. American Tradition Competition Season Kickoff

The American Tradition Competition (ATC) is kicking off their 2016/2017 Season with a two-hour reception that includes an open bar stocked with beer and wine, hors d’oeuvres and entertainment featuring two ATC Gold Medal winners. Witness amazing vocal talent, snack on hors d’oeuvres and support the ATC at this annual fundraiser.
