Savannah’s art culture is as eclectic as it is expansive. Local artists create works across every art discipline conceivable from classic and traditional to contemporary and experimental. Art aficionados are in for a treat in the city of Southern hospitality. Here’s a small collection of Savannah’s best art galleries.
Thomas Kinkade City Market Gallery
World-renowned painter Thomas Kinkade is a household name in Savannah’s art scene. His famous gallery is located in the heart of City Market, the ‘art and soul of Savannah’, on St. Julian street. Visit the gallery to see Kinkade’s canvases enlivened with a signature light that is uniquely his own.
Boasting the best of local talent for the last four decades, Gallery 209 is the perfect place to find original paintings, sculptures, woodworks, fiber and glass arts, photography and so much more. Located on River Street in the Factor’s Walk District, Gallery 209 opens its doors daily to patrons seeking inimitable art pieces made right here at home.
Known for her mixed media and watercolor paintings that capture the divinity in the beauty of nature, Tiffani Taylor opened her Whitaker Street gallery in 2011, and she’s been gifting the city with her breathtaking works ever since. Taylor provides a great opportunity to view her gallery and others every second Saturday during the Savannah Art Walk, of which she is the founder and producer.
If you prefer a particularly homegrown aesthetic, then Roots Up Gallery is the art house for you. At Roots Up, you’ll find Southern regional and folk artworks across a variety of media to include paintings, pottery, sculptures and jewelry. Many of the artists whose pieces you’ll find on display are self-taught, representing true unadulterated artistic innovation.
The Grand Bohemian Gallery, which you will find inside the Bohemian Hotel on Savannah’s riverfront, is a beautiful place to see the very best in art all across the nation. This stunning gallery is a frequented stop on Art Rise Savannah’s First Friday Art March, which provides the perfect opportunity to visit the gallery.
The Downstairs Gallery on West Gordon Street is the place to go for classical Southern original artworks from Savannah-area and low country artists. This gallery vends a stunning display of oil paintings, photography and handcrafted jewelry made from pearls, foil grass, natural minerals and other beautiful media.
Located on Broughton Street on the corner of Jen Library, the Gutstein Gallery is a beautifully minimalistic space that displays groundbreaking works of nationally-known artists along with beautiful pieces by talented SCAD alumni.
